Sweet Cuppin’ Cakes!

This week is Staff Appreciation Week at Lex’s daycare. Every year all the parents contribute to give the workers a little bonus and little treats all week long. For my contribution, I decided to make a gift basket. I wanted to do something handmade but didn’t want it to take up too much time. I settled on a cupcake baking gift basket with crocheted potholders. And when I searched for cupcake potholders, look what I found.

potholders

Yes! Cupcake-shaped potholders! Aren’t they adorable? They’re made with cotton yarn so that they can stand the heat from the oven, and there are two layers sewn together. I was really pleased with how they turned out except for their scale. I guess my gauge is large because it seems like everything I crochet turns out bigger than it should. Here’s a pic with my hand to give you an idea of how big they are.

If I end up making them again, I’ll definitely have to scale them down a bit. I really liked the color combo of the bright pink and white. It reminds me of Hello Kitty. In case you’re wondering, the reason the loop at the top is red is because it’s meant to be a cherry on top. When I first set out to make these, I also envisioned using embroidery floss to make little sprinkles on top, but I didn’t have time in the end.

For the basket, I put in a box of Funfetti cake mix, some cute cupcake liners, cupcake frosting in a can with decorative tips, and pastel sugar sprinkles along with my cupcake potholders.

This basket is going to be a door prize that one of the workers will take home. I hope he or she enjoys baking!

I was very happy to do this for the people at Lex’s daycare. They’re always so friendly and seem to really enjoy working there. Having worked at a high stress job myself, I know how important those little perks like employee appreciation weeks can be for morale. Hopefully this will brighten someone’s day and make them feel appreciated.
